Sentinel-Eastern Light Literary Afternoon
Organised by Sentinel Poetry Movement and Eastern Light EPM International in celebration of Black History Month.
Agenda includes:
-Launch of the poetry collection "Memories of Stone" by Chuma Nwokolo, Jr.,
-Pre-launch of "Letter Home" - poems by Afam Akeh
-Unmasking the future of Sentinel Poetry Quarterly and introduction of the new Editor
-Open Mike - readings of works by black writers.
Readers may read their own works or works by legendary black writers.

The World Cup did not stop the Sentinel Show afterall

When England is scheduled to play an important World Cup match, any other event in England expects a low turn-out. Some actually cancel or reschedule in deference to the England match. Probably why Sue Barker commented, with a hint of surprise at the reasonably large turnout for the Andy Murray vs Andy Roddick clash at SW19. What a clash it turned out afterall, with the young Scott shocking Roddick off the competition.

The Sentinel Live event was scheduled before the World Cup match on Saturday, and we did not feel compelled, though tempted, to cancel the reading. We suspected that in the end it might end up being an event for the passionate few. How often does poetry bear out the saying, 'many are called, but few are chosen'? The show did go on with Durlabh Singh, Munayem Mayenin, and John John-Lewis reading, though it all started shortly after 8pm as event the guests Singh and Mayenin saw the England match at home before dashing to the venue.

We are thankful to the people that made it down, especially, poet and staunch Sentinel supporter, Afam Akeh who came all the way from Oxford.

The next event will take place on Saturday, August 5th.

MUNAYEM MAYENIN, Poet in Residence for Southwark Libraries, and Editor of Poet's Letter Magazine www.poetsletter.com, and author of "Geography of Time", "The Son Of Eternity" and "Command The Moon".

DURLABH SINGH -Painter and writer, Durlabh Singh has exhibited his paintings worldwide and has published his poetry in several international literary journals. His books include "Chrome Red", "The Bats", "Neo-Expressions" and "Spaces of Heart".

Also by request, JOHN JOHN-LEWIS who excited many a lady in May 2006 Sentinel Poetry Live! returns to the venue.

There will be RAP interlude by KID ILLICIT.

Two more poets and 1 music act to be confirmed.

Due to a combination of several problematic circumstances, we felt the need to pull the last show, the 3rd in our fledgeling reading series. The Sentinel Poetry Live! will however return in full force and for the better on July, 1, 2006.

The names and profiles of the performers/readers shall be posted here in during the course of the week.

The Sentinel Poetry Live! presents an opportunity for established and upcoming poets to showcase their work to an appreciative and enlightened audience.

Sentinel Poetry Live! #2

The second Sentinel Poetry Live! event was held at the Waterloo Gallery on Saturday, May 6th 2006 and featured Chinwe Azubuike, Naomi Woddis, John John-Lewis and Lola Shoneyin. The original schedule had announced Paul Lyalls and Lula M. Unfortunately Lyall's son was a a little poorly, which meant unfortunately he had to leave before the event began. Lula M, was a no-show. We hope that Paul Lyall shall be available at a later date.

The event kicked off at 7.20 pm after a 20-minute getting to know one another. Visitors had a chance to look at John John-Lewis' poetry plaques, and some painting from an on-going exhibition at the gallery.

Chinwe Azubuike went first and read some highly emotive, if somewhat painful, some might say, bitter poems about her experiences as an African in London. Always a touchy subject, in the post-mortem segment afterward, when audience members were able to ask her questions, the debate got a little hot.

Between Azubuike's somber rendering and the bubbly performance of John-Lewis, Woddis gave a calm but very stirring reading.

John John-Lewis - crowd pleaser.

Ladies asked for John to come back next month. well... we shall see. Fingers crossed. We shall see.

Lola Shoneyin - a powerful, witty performance.

Lola Shoneyin read from both of her collections; "So all the time I was sitting on an egg" and "Song of A Riverbird". Hearing and watching Shoneyin give life to her several poems that are not flattering to the men folk was extraordinary, until she spoilt the mood with a very graphic poem about abortion.

The evening was indeed a gig-organiser's dream. We now turn our focus to June 3, 2006 for the next event. If you'd like to read on that date, please contact me at live@sentinelpoetry.org.uk

The second Sentinel Poetry Live event will take place on

First Sentinel Poetry Live Event

It was a commando style affair. Organised in just 6 days, attacked by tube emergencies and roadworks outside the venue that many several of guest not get there, but in the end it turned out to be a fantastic and memorable evening. Pictures forthcoming courtesy of Molara Wood and Obemata.

The evening started with two poems by Molara Wood, then followed by two poems by Nnorom Azuonye, and then Obemata read his new work "My Country, My Homeland". Poet and novelist Toni Kan visiting from Nigeria also read three poems from one of his poetry collections, ending with a love poem that brought Azuonye back up to read one love poem before Esiaba Irobi finally took to the stage reading powerful pieces powerfully from his latest collection "Why I Don't Like Philip Larkin & Other Poems"

The Sentinel Poetry Live events will now take place on the first Saturday of every month at the Waterloo Gallery, 14 Baylis Road, London SE1 7AA
